The Little Things That Make Autumn Feel Cosy 🍂

There’s something about autumn that makes you want to slow down a little.

Following on from our September blog, we’re now properly into autumn, and I have to admit, I’m embracing all the cosy things that come with it. Cooler evenings, pumpkin picking, candles, warm drinks, blankets and getting into your comfiest clothes as soon as the day is done.

It’s the little things that make this time of year feel so special.

Make your evenings feel cosy during autumn

Our Print of the Week this week feels like the perfect addition to a cosy autumn evening – a pumpkin sitting amongst a pumpkin patch, capturing that autumn feeling perfectly. But, of course, you can't have a cosy evening without a few essentials.

For me, that means lighting my favourite candle, making a warm drink, getting into something comfortable, grabbing a blanket and putting on my slippers.

Then comes the important question… what are we watching? At this time of year, it has to be Gilmore Girls for me. I’m yet to watch all of it, so autumn feels like the perfect excuse to work my way through it!

There’s something about settling down with a familiar favourite when it's dark outside that just feels right.

Finding some new autumn hobbies

Autumn also seems to be the perfect time to rediscover old hobbies – and try a few new ones.

Reading is definitely a must for me, whatever the season, but there’s something particularly lovely about reading in autumn.

I’ve recently been enjoying Do What Makes You Happy, which I’d definitely recommend. It’s an easy, light-hearted read that keeps you interested without requiring too much concentration – perfect after a busy day.

Next up is a puzzle

I feel like puzzles are one of those hobbies that naturally come back into your life during autumn and winter. We don't really tend to do them over the summer, but once the evenings get darker, sitting down with a puzzle suddenly feels like a lovely way to spend an hour.

And, of course, I couldn't resist an Disney Halloween themed one!

Colouring – my unexpected new favourite

Two hobbies I've discovered more recently are colouring and creative writing.

Colouring has become such a calming little activity for me. I’ve found myself reaching for it when I want to switch off and do something that doesn't involve looking at my phone.

It’s also great when the kids want me in the playroom but are actually quite happily playing together and ignoring me! 😂

So I'm there… but not really needed. I can sit and colour, and quite often they end up joining in too, which I love. Although I do have to admit, I get a little frustrated when my colouring doesn't turn out quite right. But that's probably just the perfectionist in me!

A little bit of creative writing

My other new hobby has been creative writing.

I’ve always loved writing, so I’ve really enjoyed having a go at writing based on different prompts. It’s a lovely thing to do while enjoying a coffee rather than automatically reaching for my phone.

There’s something really nice about sitting down with a coffee, a notebook and a simple prompt and just seeing where your thoughts take you.

It doesn’t have to be anything serious. It’s just a little bit of time for me. And perhaps that's what I like most about autumn. It gives you permission to slow down.

Making space for the little things

We’re often so busy thinking about what we need to get done that we forget to make time for the things that simply make us happy.

  • A warm drink.

  • A good book.

  • A candle burning in the background.

  • A favourite television show.

  • A puzzle on the table.

  • Colouring with the kids.

  • Writing while enjoying a coffee.

  • A blanket and a pair of slippers.

None of these things are particularly exciting on their own, but together they create those little moments that make an ordinary autumn evening feel special.

And isn't that what a happy place is really about? It doesn't always have to be somewhere you've travelled to. Sometimes, your happy place can simply be your sofa, your favourite mug, a cosy blanket and a quiet autumn evening. 🍂

And if you can add a beautiful print to the wall that reminds you of somewhere you've loved along the way… even better.

What are your favourite ways to make an autumn evening cosy? ☕🍁
